Thrifty Thursday + Giveaway
Plan for left-overs.
Each time I sit to do my menu for the week, I do my best to plan for leftovers. These make perfect home-made microwave dinners – or lunches in my hubby’s case.
He works the night shift which means there is no other option than to bring lunch with him. So by planning to have left-overs, he has a nice selection of microwavable meals right in the fridge and freezer.
I simply put a serving of the dinner, including side dishes, straight into a Rubbermaid container and pop it into the freezer. He has his own shelf of meals so he can just grab and go. Easy and cheap – just the way I like it!
And speaking of Rubbermaid, my Twitter pal Jim (@rubbermaid) sent me a little something to give away! It’s the Rubbermaid Premiere food-storage containers – a 20 piece set! To enter, all you have to do is leave your Thrifty Thursday Tip in a comment! How easy is that?!?!?
For more entries you can share this post with your friends and followers by Twittering or including a link on your blog. Just come-on back and leave another comment with proof
Comments for this post will be close at 10pm Eastern time on Tuesday, February 10th and the winner will be announced.
Oh, and if you’re looking for organizing ideas, information or inspiration, head on over to the Rubbermaid blog – Adventures In Organizing. Jim and his crew do a fantastic job!

I do the same thing you do. But my tip is to think about making your own bread if possible. I started doing this a few months ago and it has saved me money. Plus there are no preservatives and you can freeze any extra bread.
Thanks a bunch Carolyn G…you’re putting my husband out of business by baking your own bread
(Carolyn is my friend so I’m allowed to tease her).
My tip: Find and use the food thrift stores in your area. My husband works for Wonder/Hostess…expired bread isn’t really expired and they sell it in the thrift store much cheaper than you can buy it in the grocery store. Wonder thrift store outlets also sell all the Hostess products like cupcakes and twinkies. Buy them and freeze them. They’re great for packing lunches because they’ll defrost by lunch time. And if the thrift store doesn’t offer, make sure you ask if they have a frequent buyer card. Our store offers a free loaf for every 10 loaves you purchase.

My Thrifty Thursday tip is cloth diapers! Not a very original tip, I’m sure, but using basic cloth diapers (premium prefold & waterproof cover) saves a LOT of money! You can also buy diaper supplies used from several online sources – DiaperSwappers.com is one that a lot of people use.

I’m not very thrifty but I have been trying to cut down on buying paper plates and using real ones instead. Another thing I have been doing pretty faithfully is bringing nice grocery bags to the store instead of using their plastic ones. Yea me LOL
Thanks for the chance to enter.
And the Rubbermaid blog is awesome. Thanks for sharing the link.

Box stores (Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJs (along the East Coast) offer great savings. If you don’t need 48 rolls of toilet paper (or don’t have a place to store that much), or ten pounds of chicken breasts, etc., join with one or more friends and split the purchases and costs (of the membership fee, too).
I buy extra fruit when it is in season locally (and cheap!) and then freeze the leftovers. We then make our own smoothies out of whatever assortment of fruit is in the freezer

I RT’d your blog entry on my Twitter account. (You may need to friend me to see it. I had to set my Twitter account to private for work reasons.)
I think this is a great idea. I may have to start doing it for myself.
I bought several specially designed trash cans for re-use of plastic grocery bags. They have a special lip to hold the plastic bags in place. I have them in the bathroom and bedroom. They are stainless steel so they look great. I even gave one to my son for his apartment.
I use coupons and try to stock up when there’s a good sale. That way I save on the item when it’s not on sale, save on gas and time to go out and get it again. Thanks for the giveaway!

I love my rubbermaid. They are so much better than tupperware! I wish they made a bento-ish solution but they work well anyway:)

Cooking at home instead of eating out is my way of being thrifty! But it takes planning, so you really have to make the time to plan your menu and do the shopping. But it’s sooo worth it!

Thrifty Tip:
I send my daughter to school with a refillable Rubbermaid juice box instead of buying prepackaged juice boxes. Save a lot of money.
I cut my dryer sheets in half, they work just as well as a full sheet.
I use a square tupperware container for sandwiches instead of plastic ziploc bags. It’s better for the environment and less expensive than buying bags. And I enter all the online giveaways I see.
I was raised on dairy farm where we would grow all of our own veggies and meat products which saved my parents money. My mom taught me that making huge batches of soup and freezing them in a deep freeze. This saves time and money. She also did a lot of canning.
Here’s my Thursday Thrifty Tip – when you ‘think’ you should throw away your shampoo, because, it ‘looks’ empty – poor in about an inch or two of water and give a good shake – you’ll get several more washes out of it!
And since I’m actually posting this on Friday, here’s a Friday Freebie!
To get the most possible toothpaste out of the tube, use the handle of your toothbrush to push the toothpaste all the way up to the top of the tube!

My best money saving advice to anyone would be to keep a price book. Some use a spiral notebook and some use index cards. Keeping track of loss leaders, seasonal sales and the general price of things help save money.
When items go on sale a price book helps you know if it’s a good deal and time to stock up or one that you can pass on because it can and will go lower.
I love my Rubbermaid! I use it to store bulk items and leftovers.
Leahs last blog post..No one reads this but what the hell
know your prices get the bulk of what you need where the prices are the best then fill in and stockpile when you are near another store and can use coupons sometimes you waste more gas trying to save money otherwise
I try to use coupons whenever possible and stock up on items we use frequently as well as double coupons when stores have them.
My thrifty tip is to use paperbackswap.com or the local library when you need a new book rather than going to the bookstore and buying it. Paperback Swap only costs about $2.23 a book (just to pay postage).
Get the most out of liquid detergent when it’s all used up by adding water, giving it a little shake, and using what’s left. Thank you so much for offering this giveaway! eyeslikesugar [at] gmail [dot] com
My tip is to use a cup of vinegar in with the detergent for smelly laundry, like sour towels.

I save all scraps and heels of bread in my freezer, and when I have enough, I make a yummy bread pudding or bread/egg dish. It’s like a “free” meal.
I have disciplined myself to food shop only once a week. Of course, I do stop for milk if we run out, but I have learned to use what’s in my freezer and pantry. I’m sure all of us could easily make meals from what we have in the house, rather than do another food shop where we’ll spend money. You have to be organized, have a good list, stick to it. It saves us a lot of money!
I make my own foaming soap to refill foaming hand soap dispensers by filling a 1 cup measuring cup to the 2/3 cup mark with water, and then adding regular handsoap to the 3/4 cup mark. It’s much cheaper than buying a new dispenser each time, better for the environment because you aren’t using so many dispensers, and using foaming soap is more economical, because you use less, and I think it makes my son wash his hands better because he doesn’t just rub blobs of regular soap together.

We are as thrifty as we can get right now. No trash bags. Hey it’s a garbage can. Most stuff that is wet goes to the compost pile. Can and bottle are rinsed and recyled along with paper and glass. What’s left syrofoam (yuk), some meat scraps and those are quickly wrapped in the ton of plastic and styrofoam it came it. So I do cheat a little same 1 page of newspaper a day and put misc stuff in it like the odd crayon.
I look at the grocery sale ads and then plan my menus around them. It saves me money and I also download coupons too.
I am loving these tips!! Can’t wait to pick a winner tomorrow!

My Thrifty Thursday tip is to buy my soda in 12 pack cans to take to work & then recycle the can for a few cents. It saves a 1.00 from the vending machine & the aluminium money adds up too.
Thanks for the giveaway!

I use coupons and shop for sale items then freeze everything. Its more work to cook from scratch but much cheaper and healthier.
I drive 55-60 on the highway. It save me about $20 a week in gas vs going 70 mph to work everyday
